The type species (holotype) of the genus Lithothamnion is Lithothamnion muelleri Lenormand ex Rosanoff.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Melyvonnea aemulans (Foslie & M.Howe) Athanasiadis & D.L.Ballantine.
