The type species (lectotype) of the genus Fucus is Fucus vesiculosus Linnaeus.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Sporochnus radiciformis (R.Brown ex Turner) C.Agardh.

Type locality: Australia, probably near Sydney; (Silva & al. 1996: 638) Type: Lambert; BM (ex K); (Womersley 1987: 284) Notes: Silva et al. (1996) recommend consulting Millar & Kraft (1994a: 22) for more information on the type locality of this species. Womersley (1987) cites the type locality as "New Holl.".
