The type species (holotype) of the genus Ectocarpus is Ectocarpus siliculosus (Dillwyn) Lyngbye.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Ectocarpus siliculosus var. hiemalis (P.Crouan & H.Crouan ex Kjellman) Gallardo.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective B (Latin), pertaining to winter, also "hyemalis" (Stearn 1973).
