The type species (lectotype) of the genus Oxytoxum is Oxytoxum scolopax F.Stein.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Corythodinium compressum (Kofoid) F.J.R.Taylor.

Adjective (Latin), flattened, usually laterally (Stearn 1973).
