Adjective (Latin), red (Stearn 1973).

Silva, Basson & Moe (1996) consider the circumscription and correct name of C. rubrum, which is commonly reported throughout the world as Ceramium rubrum (Hudson) C. Agardh 1811 to be uncertain. They note that the intended basionym of C. Agardh's combination is Conferva rubra Hudson 1762, a name rendered superfluous by Hudson's citation of Fucus cartilagineus Linnaeus 1753 in the protologue and that Conferva rubra must be treated as an illegitimate synonym of Plocamium cartilagineum (Linnaeus) Dixon. They advocate conserving Ceramium rubrum C. Agardh with a neotype. Maggs et al. (2002) present convincing arguments for recognising the name Ceramium virgatum Roth for this complex.
Womersley (1998) reports this species from Fremantle, W. Aust (MEL 45384) to Wilsons Prom., Vic., and around Tasmania. He notes that it is usually confined to areas of calm to moderate water movement and that it is probably more widespread around the Australian coast. Supposedly widespread in warm seas.
