The type species (lectotype) of the genus Callithamnion is Callithamnion corymbosum (Smith) Lyngbye.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Macrothamnion pellucidum (Harvey) Wollaston.

Type Information
Type locality: "Hab. ad oras Tasmaniae (Hb. Hooker!)" [Tasmania]; (Agardh 1851: 29) Lectotype: LD; herb. alg. Agardh 18810 (Athanasiadis 1996: 172) Notes: Athanasiadis (1996: 172) gives "Juan Island, Bass Strait, Tasmania" as the type locality. No such locality in Tasmania could be found on Google.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), ending in a short, sharp point.
