The type species (holotype) of the genus Gymnogongrus is Gymnogongrus griffithsiae (Turner) C.Martius.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Besa divaricata f. ahnfeltioides (Makijenko) A.V.Skriptsova & S.Y. Shibneva.

Type locality: "URSS: Mare Japonicum, sinus Petri Primi, sinulus Perevoznaja" [Perevoznaya, Sea of Japan, Pacific Russia]; (Largaiolli 1907: 96) Holotype: VIII 1964; in strato Ahnfletiae haud fixa, 10 m subaqua; LE; (Makienko 1971: 96) Notes: Stratum of Ahnfeltia tobuchiensis, Perevoznaya Bay, Peter the Great Bay, Sea of Japan (Shibneva et al., 2020). 10 m deep, viii.1964 Makienko (INA).
