The type species (lectotype) of the genus Ceratium is Ceratium tetraceras Schrank.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Ceratium hirundinella (O.F.Müller) Dujardin.

Type locality: "...lake of Nynee Tal." Kumaon [India]; (Carter 1871: 229) Notes: Kumaon or Kumaun is one of the two regions and administrative divisions of Uttarakhand, a mountainous state of northern India.
