Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Fucus is Fucus vesiculosus Linnaeus.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Sphaerococcus coronopifolius Stackhouse.

Type Information
Syntype localities: "Habitat in rupibus fubmarinis Dorsetiae, Devoniae et Cornubiae." [Dorset, Devon and Cornwall England]; (Goodenough & Woodward 1797: 185) Notes: "That the plant now described is the Fucus coronopi facie of R. Syn. has been ascertained from the examination of Buddie's Hortus Siccus, where the original specimen gathered by Mr. Stevens on the coast; of Cornwall is preserved. We have also received specimens from the fame coast, correfponding exactly with that above mentioned."
