The type species (holotype) of the genus Peridinium is Peridinium cinctum (O.F.Müller) Ehrenberg.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Protoperidinium tenuissimum (Kofoid) Balech.

Adjective (Latin), very fine (Lewis & Short 1890).
