The type species (lectotype) of the genus Caulacanthus is Caulacanthus ustulatus (Turner) Kützing.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gloiopeltis compressa (Harvey) H.Kawai, K.Yamamura & T.Hanyuda.

Type locality: "Loo Choo Islands; in rock-pools." [Ryukyu Islands]; (Harvey 1860: 331) Lectotype: C. Wright; TCD; (Masuda & al. 1995: 192, fig. 1) Notes: Herbarium ncorrectly cited as "TDC" in Hanyuda et al. (2019: [4]).

Adjective (Latin), flattened, usually laterally (Stearn 1973).
