The type species (lectotype) of the genus Actinocyclus is Actinocyclus octonarius Ehrenberg.

Type Information
Type locality: the northeast flank of the Yamato Bank in the central part of the Japan Sea (40º19' N, 136º13.5' E); (Hayashi et al. 2012: 106) Holotype: Figs 47, 48: deep-sea sediments of the lowest Miocene (490cm in depth of the RC12-394 core) [freshwater]*; Micropaleontology Collection, National Museum of Nature and Science, Tokyo; MPC-03625 (Hayashi et al. 2012: 106) Notes: *The upper sequence of the core (above 225 cm in depth) is composed of marine clay sediments containing sands and glauconites, whereas the lower sequence is composed of lacustrine clays containing freshwater diatom valves and hard clay breccia of the same lithology as the matrix (Hayashi et al. 2012: 99, citing Burckle & Akiba 1978).
