Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Amphidinium is Amphidinium operculatum Claparède & Lachmann.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Ankistrodinium semilunatum (Herdman) Hoppenrath, Shauna Murray, Sparmann & Leander.

Type locality: England: Isle of Man:Port Erin (south end of beach); (Index Nominum Algarum)

General Environment
This is a marine species.
