The type species (lectotype) of the genus Fucus is Fucus vesiculosus Linnaeus.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Sargassum virgatum C.Agardh.

Type locality: not specified ("in mari Indico"); (Silva & al. 1996: 706) Notes: Silva et al. (1996) recommend consulting C. Agardh (1920a: 10) for more information on the type locality of this species.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), twiggy, long and slender or streaked, rod-like (Stearn 1973).
