The type species (lectotype) of the genus Fucus is Fucus vesiculosus Linnaeus.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Odonthalia corymbifera (S.G.Gmelin) Greville.

Syntype localities: "inter fucos in Kamchatka lectos, e mari mediterraneo adlata quoque eius fragmenta habui" [Collected between fucoids in Kamchatka, also fragments from the Mediterranean Sea]; (Gmelin 1768: 124)
