The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Vertebrata aterrima (Hooker f. & Harvey) Kuntze.

Type locality: New Zealand: East Coast ; (Index Nominum Algarum) Notes: Probable syntypes: TCD 12786-8, BM 1067593-6 and BM 1067598 (Díaz-Tapia et al., 2017).
