This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Eucheuma serra (J.Agardh) J.Agardh.

Type locality: "Hab. in mari Indiae orientalis" [Mauritius]; (Agardh 1841: 17) Type: LD; 34664 [Kylin 1932: pl. 10: fig. 2] (Yoshida 1998: 802) Notes: The type locality, Mauritius was first recorded by Doty (1988: 180). He notes that the holotype for Sphaerococcus serra J. Agardh is believed to have been illustrated by Kylin (1932: pl. 10, fig. 21) as Agardh Herbarium Specimen No. 34664. EPITYPE (designated by Dumilag et al., 2020: 500): GWS 22956 (=K-LH-12,950, BOLD ID: OZSEA1518-10, fig. 14), Old Gulch, Lord Howe Island, New South Wales, Australia, 31°51.3201'S, 159°04.2308'E.
