Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Chondria is Chondria tenuissima (Withering) C.Agardh.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Acanthophora muscoides (Linnaeus) Bory.

Type locality: Brazil; (de Jong, Hitipeuw & Prud'Homme van Reine 1999: 133) Neotype: LD; 94/068.9765 (nÂș38011) (de Jong, Hitipeuw & Prud'Homme van Reine 1999: 131) Notes: Agardh's specimen, Chondria muscoides from Brazil, inscribed "Chondria muscoides Ag. ad oras Brasiliam & ex. mus. Paris dedit Desfontaines", deposited in small fragments at the herbarium of Lund is proposed as neotype by de Jong et al. (1999).

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), resembling a moss (Neal 1993).
