This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Sphacelaria cirrosa (Roth) C.Agardh.

Type locality: Trieste, Italy; (Silva & al. 1996: 575) Type: WU; (Athanasiadis 1996: 197) Notes: This type locality was first recorded by Prud'homme van Reine (1982: 225). Womersley (1987: 166) gives the following data: Lectotype from Trieste Italy (Wulfen); neotype in WU.
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), tendrilled, ending in a narrow curled or wavy appendage (Stearn 1973).
