The type species (holotype) of the genus Lomentaria is Lomentaria articulata (Hudson) Lyngbye.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gastroclonium reflexum (Chauvin) Kützing.

Adjective (Latin), reflexed, bent sharply backwards (Stearn 1973).
