This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Ericaria barbatula (Kützing) Molinari & Guiry.

Type locality: Golfo di Napoli; (Index Nominum Algarum) Holotype: Herb. Sonder; MEL; folio 694721 (Cormaci, Furnari, Giaccone, Scammacca & Serio 1992: 25) Notes: l'herbier Sonder 1812-1881 (planche I, fig. 1-3) (Cormaci et al., 1992).
