Type Information
Type locality: "Banks' Isles, on the North West coast of America" [Actually Isla de los Estados, Argentina]; (Hughey, Silva & Hommersand 2001: 1097) Type: Archibald Menzies; E; (Hommersand, Guiry, Fredericq & Leister 1993: 112) Notes: Although the location cited by Turner is in North America, Hughey et al. (2001: 1097) have provided incontrovertible evidence that the specimen was actually collected in South America, being identical to specimens collected from Isla de los Estados, Argentina. Menzies was ship's surgeon on Capt Colnett's Price of Wales on the northern shore of Isla de los Estados where the ship anchored from 26 January to 12 February, 1787. The specimen seems to have been subsequently mislabeled.
