The type species (lectotype) of the genus Nitella is Nitella opaca (C.Agardh ex Bruzelius) C.Agardh.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Nitella confervacea (Brébisson) A.Braun ex Leonhardi.
Type Information
Type locality: "Aube: Etang de Barbery-aux-Moines"; (Gregor & al. 2012: table 1) Lectotype: ANG; specimen labeled "Nitella harioti/Etang Barbery aux moines" (Gregor & al. 2012: table 1) Notes: *Hy (1905: 94) did not provide locality data in the protologue, but subsequently, Hy (1913: 18) noted that material came from "Aube: Etang de Barbery-aux-Moines (Gregor et al., 2012).
