Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Melanothamnus nudus (Mamoozadeh & Freshwater) Freshwater.

Holotype locality: Parque de Juventud, Calle Primero, Colon, Caribbean coast of Panama (9º22.004' N, 079º54.259' W); (Mamoozadeh & Freshwater 2012: 335) Holotype: Brian Wysor; 20 May 2009; growing intertidally on synthetic plastic among rubble; US Alg. Coll.; 211334 (=PHYCOS-2613) including US Algal Collection slides nos. -8611 thru-8614 (Mamoozadeh & Freshwater 2012: 335) Notes: Isotype in WNC, WNC32156. Herbarium sheets and permanent slides.
