Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Gigartina is Gigartina pistillata (S.G.Gmelin) Stackhouse.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Chondracanthus tenellus (Harvey) Hommersand.

Type Information
Type locality: "Kaikai-sima, north of the proper Loo Choo group." [Kikai-jima, Amami-gunto, Ryukyu-retto, Japan]; (Harvey 1860: 332) Lectotype: C. Wright; TCD; (Masuda & al. 1995: 195, fig.12) Notes: Isotype: BM. Type locality: "Kaikai-sima", N. of Ryukyu-retto, Japan; collected by Charles Wright (Index Nominum Algarum). Type locality: Kaiki-shima, Loo Choo Isl. (Mikami 1965: 208). Masuda et al. (1995: 195) note that this entity was based on material collected at 'Kaikai-shima' (which is not a name in use at present and may be an error for Kigaiga-shima island), north of the Ryukyu Islands.

Adjective (Latin), delicate (Stearn 1973).

General Environment
This is a marine species.

Habitat
Growing on rocks between tide-marks, often in tide-pools (Mikami 1965: 208).
