The type species (lectotype) of the genus Sphaerococcus is Sphaerococcus coronopifolius Stackhouse.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gelidium pectinatum (Montagne) Montagne.

Notes: Andersen (2018: 437) noted "Lectotype (designated here by G. Furnari, C. Perrone & K.L. Vinogradova): [icon in] Buxbaum, Pl. Min. Cogn. Cent. 2: t. VIII, fig. 3. 1728 (an element cited by Agardh and the lectotype of F. serra)."

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), pectinate, with narrow close-set divisions like a comb (Stearn 1973).
