Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Conferva is Conferva rupestris Linnaeus.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Polysiphonia stricta (Mertens ex Dillwyn) Greville.

Type Information
Type locality: Bantry Bay; Type: Miss Ellen Hutchins; BM; (Kim, Maggs, McIvor & Guiry 2000: 85) Notes: Annotated by Miss Hutchins “I think that you will find this only a variety of C. stricta [Conferva stricta]: it grows in deep water.” She also noted that this or other material weas found on the stalks of Fucus digitatus [Laminaria hyperborea].

Origin of Species Name
Participle B (Latin), spreading, outspread, diverging from the axis at almost 90 degrees (Stearn 1973).
