Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Dictyota is Dictyota dichotoma (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Rugulopteryx suhrii (Kützing) De Clerck & Coppejans.

Type Information
Type locality: said to be Madagascar, but Algoa Bay, Cape Province, South Africa; (Silva & al. 1996: 597) Holotype: S s.n.; (De Clerck 2003: 175) Notes: Silva et al. (1996) recommend consulting Kützing (1859: 5) for more information on the type of this species. De Clerck (2003) notes that Papenfuss (1940: 207) showed that the type specimen came from Algoa Bay rather than from Madagascar as stated in the protologue.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), producing offsets, bearing progeny as offshoots (Stearn 1973).
