The type species (lectotype) of the genus Hydrolithon is Hydrolithon reinboldii (Weber Bosse & Foslie) Foslie.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Harveylithon superficiale (Keats & Y.M.Chamberlain) Maneveldt & Keats.
