Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Mesophyllum is Mesophyllum lichenoides (J.Ellis) Me.Lemoine.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Perithallis incisa (Foslie) Athanasiadis.

Type Information
Type locality: near Wellington, Island Bay, North Island, New Zealand; (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 342) Lectotype (designated by Woelkerling & Harvey 1992: 382): W.A. Setchell No. 6354; June 1904; uppermost sublittoral zone, on Corallina and Amphiroa; TRH; B17-2551 (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 342) Notes: Not "Bay of Islands" as in some publications.

General Environment
This is a marine species.

Habitat
Plants occur subtidally to a depth of at least 15 m and intertidally on reef tops and in tide pools and on various algae, sponges and rock (Woelkerling & Harvey 1993: 588).
