The type species (holotype) of the genus Lithothamnion is Lithothamnion muelleri Lenormand ex Rosanoff.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Phymatolithon purpureum (P.Crouan & H.Crouan) Woelkerling & L.M.Irvine.
