The type species (holotype) of the genus Gelidiella is Echinocaulon spinellum Kützing.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pterocladiella minima (Guiry & Womersley) Santelices & Hommersand.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), very little, very least (Stearn 1973).

General Environment
This is a marine species.

Habitat
Occurs on calcareous substrata: dead shells and living crustose coralline algae (Womersley & Guiry (1994: 123).
