The type species (lectotype) of the genus Amphiroa is Amphiroa tribulus (J.Ellis & Solander) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Rhodopeltis australis (Harvey) Harvey.

Type locality: mouth of Swan River, Western Australia; (Silva & al. 1996: 186) Notes: This type locality was first recorded by Harvey (1859a: pl. 77) (Silva et al., 1996)

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), south, southern (Stearn 1973).
