The type species (lectotype) of the genus Phormidium is Phormidium lucidum Kützing ex Gomont.

Type locality: Saint-Gilles, Réunion; (Silva & al. 1996: 39) Type: see below (epitype) F. Jadin 76; iv.1890; (Index Nominum Algarum) Notes: This type locality fide Jadin, 1894 (Silva et al., 1996). Epitype: strain FK13-1, US 217964. Looe Key, Florida (24°35'400" N, 81°31'100" W), 10 June 2013, epizoic on corals and epilithic, 20 m depth, leg. N. Engene (Engene et al. 2015: 679).
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), shaped like a pencil or an artist'’s camel-hair brush (Stearn 1973).
