The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Melanothamnus incomptus (Harvey) Díaz-Tapia & Maggs.

Type locality: near Muizenberg, False Bay, Cape Province, South Africa; (Silva & al. 1996: 542) Type: TCD; (Index Nominum Algarum) Notes: Probable holotype: TCD 192 (Díaz-Tapia et al., 2017).
