The type species (holotype) of the genus Peridinium is Peridinium cinctum (O.F.Müller) Ehrenberg.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Apocalathium euryceps (Rengefors & Barbara Meyer) Craveiro, Daugbjerg, Moestrup & Calado.
