Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Porphyra is Porphyra purpurea (Roth) C.Agardh.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pyropia pulchra (Hollenberg) S.C.Lindstrom & Hughey.

Type locality: Mission Point, Monterey County, California, U.S.A; (Lindstrom & Hughey 2016: 282) Holotype: July 27, 1965; on Gigartina agardhii [now Mastocarpus]; US; 077804 (Lindstrom & Hughey 2016: 282) Notes: Index Nominum Algarum notes type locality also Santa Cruz Co., Humboldt Co., and Washington.
Holotype: US 077804, collected by G.J.Hollenberg (Sutherland et al. 2011: 1145).
