The type species (lectotype) of the genus Hydrolithon is Hydrolithon reinboldii (Weber Bosse & Foslie) Foslie.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Harveylithon munitum (Foslie & M.Howe) A.Rösler, Perfectti, V.Peña & J.C.Braga.

Type locality: Cave Cays, Exuma Chain, Bahamas; (Woelkerling 1998: 319) Holotype: M.A. Howe; 19.ii.1905; NY; Howe no. 4023 (Woelkerling 1998: 319) Notes: Isotypes PC, Howe no. 4023, General Herbarium box collection (non-fossil; filed in non-geniculate coralline type collections cabinet under basionym); TRH, Howe 4023, includes three slides also numbered 4023; BM, algal box collection 925. Penrose in Womersely (1996: 264) gives the following data: lectotype in TRH (no. 4023); designated by Adey in Adey & Lebednik 1967: 20; illustrated by Penrose (1990: fig. 37A-E).
