The type species (lectotype) of the genus Porphyra is Porphyra purpurea (Roth) C.Agardh.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Wildemania amplissima (Kjellman) Foslie.

General Environment
This is a marine species.
Description
Membranous, distromatic, rose-purple to cinnabar-red fronds with regularly undulate margins, clear red on drying, to 600 mm long and 300 mm wide, from short stipe and basal holdfast. Cells ± cubical, to 30 µm diam.
Habitat
On rock and epiphytic, lowest tidal pools and subtidally to 10 m, Scotland, NE England and N and NE Ireland, locally abundant.

Similar Species
Porphyra miniata, known from more northerly seas.
