Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Herposiphonia versicolor (Hooker & Harvey) Reinbold.

Origin of Species Name
Noun (Latinised), Latinised form of the Greek, argos, white; the hundred-eyed keeper of Io, killed by Mercury at the command of Jupiter (Smith & Lockwood 1933).
