The type species (holotype) of the genus Lyngbya is Lyngbya confervoides C.Agardh ex Gomont.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Leptolyngbya polysiphoniae (Frémy) Anagnostidis.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), resembling, or growing on or in species of the genus Polysiphonia (Stearn 1973).
