Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Zonaria is Zonaria flava C.Agardh.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Dictyota dichotoma (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

Type Information
Type locality: Mediterranean Sea (African coast); (Silva & al. 1996: 901) Holotype: CN; C7F65 (De Clerck 2003: 176) Notes: Silva et al. (1996) recommend consulting Lamouroux (1809b) for further information regarding the type locality of this species. According to De Clerck (2003), the type locality is [Côtes de Barbarie] North Africa, Mediterranean Sea. He notes that the original description and the type specimen mention North Africa as type locality. Confusion arose when Kützing (1849: 557) stated that the Indian Ocean was the original locality.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), almost circular, with length breadth ratio of about 6 to 5 (Stearn 1973).
