The type species (holotype) of the genus Litholepis is Litholepis caspica (Foslie) Foslie.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Melobesia affinis (Foslie) Me.Lemoine.

Type locality: Whistling Island, St John, US Virgin Islands; (Woelkerling 1998: 297) Lectotype: F. Børgesen; 21.iii.1906; 15 fathoms; TRH; A16-992. Børgesen 2072, includes slides 1235 and 1236; designated by Woelkerling, 1993: 22, who provides further comments. (Woelkerling 1998: 297) Notes: Isolectotype: PC, Børgesen 2072, General Herbarium box collection (non-fossil; filed in non-geniculate coralline type collections cabinet under basionym).
Origin of Species Name
Adjective B (Latin), neighbouring, allied to, akin to (Stearn 1973).
