Type Information
Type locality: Bahama Is, West Indies; (Huisman & Womersley 1994: 113) Notes: Huisman & Womersley (1994: 113) note that the type is lost; lectotypified by Ellis & Solander, 1786: pl. 22, fig. 2 (see Papenfuss et al., 1982).

General Environment
This is a marine species.

Habitat
According to Wang et al. (2005: 688), plants usually grew on reef rock at 1-16m depths or were intertidal, where they were sometimes partially covered by coral sands. Huisman & Kurihara (2006: 19) note: occurs from Augusta, W.A., around northern Australia to Lake Macquarie, N.S.W.; also widespread in warmer waters; epilithic, occasionally with its base lightly covered with sand; collected from depths ranging from the intertidal to 30 m, usually in areas of moderate water movement.
