The type species (lectotype) of the genus Nitella is Nitella opaca (C.Agardh ex Bruzelius) C.Agardh.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Nitella subglomerata var. lindheimeri (A.Braun) Raam.
Origin of Species Name
Participle A (Latin), acuminate, i.e. tapering gradually or abruptly from inwardly curved sides into a narrow point (Stearn 1973).
