The type species (holotype) of the genus Peridinium is Peridinium cinctum (O.F.Müller) Ehrenberg.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Glenodinium alpinum (Perty) Perty.

Adjective A (Latin), alpine, growing in the Alps or in the alpine zone of other mountains (Stearn 1973).
