The type species (lectotype) of the genus Conferva is Conferva rupestris Linnaeus.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pylaiella littoralis (Linnaeus) Kjellman.

Type locality: "Found by Mr [W.J.] Hooker in salt marshes at Cley, Norfolk [England] in April 1808, growing amongst Ulva compressa"; (Smith 1813-1814: pl. 2571)

Adjective (Latin), branched at right angles.
