Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gracilaria is Gracilaria compressa (C.Agardh) Greville.

Type Information
Type locality: Kisarazu, Chiba Prefecture, Japan; (Yamamoto 1995: 210) Holotype: 28 May 1992; HAK; (Yamamoto 1995: 210) Notes: Holotype specimen (spermatangial) and other specimens are deposited at the Herbarium of Marine Botany, Faculty of Fisheries, Hokkaido University (HAK). Yamamoto (1995: 210) notes that this species grows on rocks, pebbles and shells covered with sandy mud from low tide mark down to upper sublittoral zone in comparatively calm waters and frequently is found with G. vermiculophylla (Yamamoto & Sasaki 1988).
