Fossil: This is a genus of fossil species, or a genus with a fossil type species, or a genus the type species of which was originally described as a fossil.

Description: Valves circular, nearly flat with a marginal ring of small, distinct spines. Frustule heterovalvate: the epivalve with alternatively long and short punctate striae; the hypovalve with punctate striae of approximately equal length. Taxonomic status: This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Fourtanier, E.J. & Kociolek, J.P. (2009). Catalogue of diatom names: Part II: Abas through Bruniopsis. Occasional Papers of the California Academy of Sciences 156(II): 1-231, 2 figs, 1 table.

Comments: The type species was described from fossil deposits in Felso-Esztergaly, Hungary. Mann (1925) described A. adeei from recent dredgings off the Philippine Islands, but because he did not locate a living cell or complete frustule, he was unable to determine whether or not A. adeei was heterovalvate and whether or not the genus is extant. Until electron microscopical studies of A. pantocsekii reveal the presence or absence of fultoportulae, it is not possible to place Anisodiscus in its proper family.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
