Description: Stipe terete, branched or unbranched, each axis terminating in a peltate or perfoliate, coriaceous, dusky red blade. Perennial. Stipe of longitudinally coursing, pseudodichotomous filaments. Blades of subspherical cells, decreasing in diameter toward cuticle. Axial filaments and surrounding rhizoids in blades frequently aggregated, producing macroscopically visible veins radiating from stipe to margin of blade. Additional rhizoids crossing from cortex to cortex. New blades initiated in autumn in response to short photoperiods (Lindstrom, 1980; Powell, 1986). Pit plugs lacking cap layers. Thalli dioecious. Carpogonium terminating a long, adventitious, distally recurved filament with extremely enlarged, lobed distal cells. Auxiliary cell on separate, adventitious filament, distal, with adjacent enlarged, lobed cells. Fertilization occurring in spring; post-fertilization development delayed until autumn (Lindstrom, 1981). Connecting filaments present. Most cells of cystocarp becoming relatively large carposporangia. Spermatangia distal on elongate, superficial spermatangial mother cells. Tetrasporophyte isomorphic. Large, zonate tetrasporangia borne superficially in nemathecia on upper, low or rarely both surfaces of blades. Outer fertile portions of terminal blades deciduous following release of reproductive products. Nondeciduous portions of blades eventually eroding and leaving scars on stipes.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
